Basics of Studying the Bible

PRAYER
Step 1: Read the passage.
Plan to read your passage several times.
Step 2: What does it say?
Examine what the passage says.
5 Ws & H -- Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
Look for the obvious! Consider:
Step 3: What does it mean? After your overview, begin to read the passage more carefully. Study a text carefully, rationally, and thoroughly to find the original, intended meaning.
Step 4: How does it apply? Apply the word of God to your life.
CAPTURE IT! Consider capturing your time through charting, journaling, outlining, notes, etc. to review and revisit later.
Example Passage: Jonah 2: 1-10
- Open and close your study time in prayer.

- Key words, phrases, people
- Make lists
- Watch for contrasts and comparisons
- Note expressions of time and locations
- Identify themes
Step 3: What does it mean? After your overview, begin to read the passage more carefully. Study a text carefully, rationally, and thoroughly to find the original, intended meaning.
- Interpret scripture with scripture
- Context
- What is author’s intent and/or purpose?
- Cross references
- Secondary Sources: Bible dictionary, Commentaries, Word studies, etc.
Step 4: How does it apply? Apply the word of God to your life.
- Is there a lesson to learn?
- Is there a command to obey?
- Is there a sin to avoid?
- Is there a promise to claim and keep?
- What does the passage tell you about God?
- What can you share with others?
