Are You Winning The Fight?
Jacob, son of Isaac and Rebekah, displayed some questionable character traits in his younger years. He bargained his elder brother Esau out of his birthright (Genesis 25:27-34). He later tricked his father, Isaac, into giving him Esau’s blessing (Genesis 27:1-40).
Many years later, Jacob found himself wrestling with God (Genesis 32:22-32). They are rolling and tussling. God is trying to overpower Jacob, but Jacob refuses to give up. God stands to leave and Jacob becomes the aggressor. He latches onto God and forbids Him to leave. “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (Genesis 32:26).
Jacob had matured. He was married, a father, he had come to know more about God and the call on his life.
That early morning Jacob learned a lesson. We, from him, can learn a valuable lesson too. We all have to fight something, someone, but God wants it all. Not possessions, not money, you.
Do you feel like you’re fighting for your life? You duck and Issue 1 lands a solid right hook. You weave and Issue 10 sweeps you off your feet causing you to land on the ground.
What happens when you’re done? Do you contemplate staying there, throwing in the towel?
In life, we are fighting. Are you winning? Are you grabbing hold of God and saying, “I will not let you go”. Are you committed to the journey ahead? Are you willing to fight for Him?
He wants it all.
Jacob won that battle. What about you? Is God wrestling you? Is He testing you to determine whether you will hold on and not give up until you are the victor and not the victim?
God stepped away from Jacob and changed Jacob’s name to Israel “because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.” Will he be able to say the same about you?
